The allies
The Allied Powers was one of the two major alliances during World War II; the four main countries in the alliance were Great Britain, France, the Soviet Union, and the United States.
The major purpose for the Allies was to act as a defense against the attacks of the Axis Powers. At the beginning of the World War, Germany and Russia got along but when Hitler ordered a surprise attack on Russia, on June 22, 1941, Russia joined the Allies and became Germany´s enemy. The United States wanted to be neutral during the World War, but when the Japanese surprise attacked the United States at Pearl Harbor, United States also joined the Allies.
On May 1944, the Allies had prepared an enormous invasion force. Thousands of planes, ships, tanks, landing craft, and more than three million troops waited for their order to attack. In order for the Germans to be surprised by the attack, the Allies has set up an imitation army so that the Germans would think that the real army would attack the French seaport of Calais.
The invasion began on June 6, 1944, otherwise known as D-Day. At the beginning of that day, British, American, French, and Canadian troops fought their way onto a beach in Normandy. They sheltered behind concrete wall three feet thick, but still the Allies took heavy casualties.
Within a month of D-Day, more than one million troops had landed after the invasion. On July 25, the Allies could finally get through German defenses near Saint-Lô, and the United States army broke out. About a month later, the Allies marched into Paris. By September, they had already liberated France, Belgium, and Luxemburg. After that they started to focus on liberating Germany.
