The AXIS POWERS
The Axis Powers was one of the two major alliances during World War II; the three main countries in the alliance were Germany, Italy, and Japan. These countries had two common interests, territorial expansion and foundation of empires based on military conquest and the overthrow of the post-World War I international order, and the destruction of of Soviet Communism.
Treaties and Alliances:
- November 1, 1936 (Germany and Italy announce Rome-Berlin Axis, after signing a treaty of friendship a week before)
- November 25, 1936 (Nazi Germany and Imperial Japan signed the Anti-Comintern Pact, which was directed toward the Soviet Union)
- November 6, 1937 (Italy joined the Anti-Comintern Pact)
- May 22, 1939 (Germany and Italy signed the Pact of Steel, giving the Axis Powers military provisions)
- September 27, 1940 (Germany, Italy, and Japan signed the Tripartite Pact, which it what officially became know as the Axis Alliance)
Before the Tripartite Pact was signed, the Axis Powers had already begun invading countries. In July 7, 1937, Japan invaded China to start the war in the Pacific, in the meantime, Germany started to invade Poland on September 1, 1939, which is what lead to the European war.
A few weeks after the defeat of France, in July 1940, Adolf Hitler decided that Nazi Germany would attack the Soviet Union. In order for Germany to gain more supplies for future battles, Germany started pressuring Southern European countries to join the Axis Powers. After many ups and downs and many losses, Hungary joined the Axis on November 20, 1940. The Romanians joined on November 23, 1940 after already requesting a mission from the Germans. Slovakia followed the Romanians by joining on November 24, 1940. Bulgaria joined until March 1, 1941 after a lot of insisting from Germany´s part. On June 22, 1941, the Axis invaded the Soviet Union and four days later, Finland trying to regain territory that was lost during the Winter War (1939-1940), entered the war against the Soviet Union. Still, Finland never signed the Tripartite Pact.
When Japan attacked the United States by dropping bombs at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii on December 7, 1941, the Axis powers declared war on the United States. This is when the Atlantic and Pacific wars actually became a world war.

axis powers are defeatedItaly was the first country of the Axis powers to give up and join the Allied powers on September 8, 1943. Following Italy, Romania also joined the Allies on August 23, 1944. Bulgaria surrendered on September 8, 1944, after the Soviet Union declined the offer of an armistice. Finland signed an armistice with the Soviet Union on September 19, 1944.
Hungary never surrendered because of Germany´s occupation inside Hungary. The war ended for Hungary until early April 1945. German troops were inside of Slovakia in the summer of 1944, so Slovakia remained in the Axis as a pawn for Germany until the Soviets captured the capital in early April. |
Seven days after Hitler committed suicide, May 7, 1945, Germany surrendered unconditionally to the Allies. Still, Japan continued to fight on alone until it finally surrendered on September 2, 1945.
